Essay Question

"Why is cultural identity an important element on our educational journey?"

Here is the official essay question to help guide your essay writing! The reason this question was chosen is because as a First Nation people we have to find comfort walking in two worlds so to speak. We should know some of our history, our culture, or how beautiful we are as a people to keep our identities and we also have to be successful in our academic studies to be self-sufficient citizens in our communities.

With this question being asked we want to know why is it important to know who we are as a First Nation person and how it helps us to be successful on our educational journey (in school). Some questions to ponder:
  • How can teachings be implemented in the classroom (for example in our school some teachers use the Seven Grandfathers to guide the rules of the classroom)?
  • Does knowing who you are make you more confident? How does this confidence help you to be successful in school?
  • How does this help to overcome negative stereotypes and racism?
  • How does knowing our history help us move forward?
  • How do we act at ceremonies and sacred places and how can those actions be carried through into the classroom?
In my own class we did this same essay question and to help my students we watched the "8th Fire" series as seen on CBC in our Daily Three lessons. We also had discussions and journal entries regarding this question to help assist with their essay writing.

Happy Writings!
